James Wiseman Reconnects with Mike Brown in Knicks Camp Battle

When the New York Knicks signed James Wiseman to an Exhibit 9 training camp contract on September 16, 2026, the move added a fascinating dynamic to New York's center competition. At 25 years old, the former No. 2 overall pick enters Knicks camp not as a franchise pillar, but as a hungry veteran seeking an operational role on the defending NBA champions.

What makes Wiseman's arrival particularly compelling is his history with Knicks head coach Mike Brown. Brown served as the associate head coach for the Golden State Warriors during Wiseman's first two professional seasons (2020 through 2022). That shared background gives the Knicks coaching staff firsthand familiarity with Wiseman's elite physical tools and the precise tactical structure needed to unlock his game.

Elite Physical Tools in Modern Pick-and-Roll Offense

Standing 6-foot-11 with a 7-foot-6 wingspan and exceptional vertical bounce, Wiseman brings athletic dimensions that few third-string centers possess across the NBA. In Mike Brown's high-pace, motion-heavy offensive scheme, vertical rim gravity plays a vital role:

• Lob Threat and Gravity: Wiseman's length forces weak-side help defenders to stay attached near the rim, opening up driving lanes and corner kick-out passes for Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, and Tyler Kolek.
• Finishing in Traffic: Over 152 career regular-season games with Golden State, Detroit, and Indiana, Wiseman has converted 56.0% of his field goal attempts, primarily through rim-running dunks and interior putbacks.
• Transition Rim Running: Wiseman runs the floor with exceptional sprint speed for a center, fitting the fast-paced possession philosophy that Brown installed during New York's title run.
• Offensive Rebounding: Wiseman averages 5.5 rebounds in just 18.9 minutes per game for his career (over 10.4 rebounds per 36 minutes), providing active disruption on the offensive glass.

The Center Audition: Wiseman vs. Eubanks

With Karl-Anthony Towns entrenched as the All-NBA starting center and veteran Andre Drummond anchoring the second-unit rebounding rotation, the Knicks' camp battle centers on depth and tactical versatility.

The audition creates an intriguing contrast in styles:

• James Wiseman offers high-ceiling vertical athleticism, shot-blocking length, and transition speed, presenting upside as a rim-rolling rim protector.
• Drew Eubanks provides high-floor positional screening, physical chest-to-chest defense, and veteran execution with 380+ games of NBA experience.

For Mike Brown, having both archetypes in Charleston and Tarrytown allows the coaching staff to evaluate different lineup combinations against top-tier competition before finalizing opening-night decisions.

Contract Dynamics and Roster Strategy

Because Wiseman signed a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 contract, the Knicks carry zero financial risk entering the 2026-27 season. Leon Rose's front office continues to manage second-apron cap parameters while exploring trade options involving young forward Pacôme Dadiet to generate additional roster headroom.

If Wiseman demonstrates defensive focus, discipline in drop coverage, and reliable screen setting in preseason action, he could secure a standard contract or position himself as a primary in-season depth option for the defending champions.
